What are the symptoms of postpartum/perinatal depression?

According to the DSM-5, symptoms include:

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness.
  • Crying a lot, often without a clear reason.
  • Irritability, anger, or feeling on edge.
  • Extreme fatigue or lack of energy (beyond the usual new-parent tiredness).
  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy.
  • Withdrawing from family and friends.
  • Changes in appetite or sleep (too much or too little).
  • Difficulty bonding with your baby.
  • Thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby (in severe cases).
