What causes high-functioning depression?

Like other forms of depression, high-functioning depression can be influenced by:

  • Genetics.
  • Chronic stress.
  • Trauma or unresolved grief.
  • Personality traits such as perfectionism and high self-expectations.
  • Neurochemical imbalances.

Some studies suggest that people with certain cognitive styles, like rumination, negative self-talk, or excessive self-criticism, are more vulnerable to this type of long-term, low-grade depression.

I’m certain my self-critical and perfectionistic nature, combined with experiencing a major depressive disorder before, adds to my dysthymia.
